Books[]

Before there was a Skill Tree, the only way to upgrade Arthur's abilities was to find and use Books. Implemented in the Pre-Alpha 21735 build, Books had to be used within the Inventory in order to activate its passive effects. As well as that, many Books had effects that could be stacked until it reached its maximum percentage.

Although Books still exist in the final game, there are some books that were removed or changed between versions.

Wastrel[]

Appearance[]

Female Wastrel Variants

The Wastrel wearing a yellow dress as seen in a lineup.

Between the Pre-Alpha 17956 and XXXXX build, it was possible for Wastrellettes to spawn wearing a yellow torn dress. This is no longer possible in the final game.

Behaviour[]

In the Pre-Alpha build, getting too close to Wastrels would cause them to tell the player to go away in a rude tone. They'd also walk around the spot they spawned in, and initiate brief "conversations" with each other.

Sometimes, a Wastrel would run up to the player and beg for specific items, usually food or medication. Upon being given the requested item, they'd give the player a gift in return.

Plague Wastrels[]

Introduced in the Early Access Build 27755, Plague Wastrels were very different from their current iteration.

Appearance[]

Some victims spawned with regular dark or light skin tones, though some could spawn with a dark blue, almost ashy, skin tone.

Behaviour[]

Plague Wastrels could be found shambling about during the day, and disappeared during the night. They also didn't have any special walking/running/attacking animations, even though they existed even before their implementation. They would not engage in combat with anyone, unless they were provoked.

Interestingly, Plague Wastrels spoke comprehensible English, and would speak like any regular Wastrel.

Crier[]

Appearance[]

TheCrierVariants

Old colours for the Crier dress.

Each variation of the Crier's dress changed during development. As seen in the accompanying image, the yellow, flowery dress became lighter and less harsh on the eyes, the purple and green dress became pink/purple, and the dark blue dress was changed to a lighter tone.

Only two dresses had their colours changed completely, that being the red and pink dress, which turned into a light green, and the orange/yellow dress, which became light pink.

It'd also seem that their hair colour changed, as old textures makes it seem like they had grey, brownish hair. Their current iteration has white hair.

In the files, there is a texture for a Crier without wearing a Happy Face Mask.

Madame Wanda had a special red dress, cardigan and hat. It's unknown why she no longer has this appearance in the final game.

Behaviour[]

Between the Pre-Alpha 17956 and XXXXX builds, it was possible to give Criers A Lovely Bouquet to dissuade them. This is no longer possible, as the item was removed.

In the Launch Trailer for the game, a Crier can be seen attacking Arthur with a Rolling Pin, despite their complete vulnerability in the game.

Headmistress[]

The Headmistress had, or was planned to have, two additional "screen faces", which were not used. It can be assumed that the first two were going to be used during her countdown before attacking the player.

Buff EarsToTheGround Audio[]

Arthur and Ollie's encounter[]

There's an early recording of the conversation between Arthur and Ollie after they infiltrated the Victory Memorial Camp. However, Arthur's voice actor is not Alex Wyndham, but is instead someone completely different.

Considering it's the same voice that Arthur had for the intro between the Pre-Alpha 17956 - 22249 builds, it's possible that the voice belongs to one of the developers.

There's also unused audio that suggests Arthur was originally going to kill Ollie during their first encounter.

You Can Behave![]

There's an unused question for the Oh, Behave! game show, possibly intended to be the very last question for Arthur to answer. As of yet, only the hostess audio has been found.

The questioner was Nick Lightbearer himself, who's question would've been:
"Who's the grooviest, baby? And the answers are:"
"A. I am!"
"B. I am!"
"C. I am, baby! It's a freebie! You can't lose! Now go out there and behave!"

The reason why it wasn't included is unknown, though it's probably because of its irrelevancy compared to the previous questions.

Misc[]

  • There are many unused preview videos for the skill tree showcasing different skills the player could've unlocked. Whether they were used at some point in development is currently unknown.
    • Some of these unused videos show a different display of the NPCs health than is currently used in the game, unused items and animations, old UI notifications, short clips from cutscenes and trailers, and worse quality settings.
    • The unused videos are also much longer than the ones currently used.
