"Well look at you! Ah, to be young again."
— A Crier greeting the player.

Criers are special kinds of Wellettes, only found in Hamlyn Village.

Buff EasilyForgotten Appearance[]

Criers are old, short women who wear glasses, white woollen cardigans, stylish hats with flowers on the band, and flower patterned dresses of varying colours.

Buff TippyToes Behaviour[]

When not upset, Criers behave much the same as the other Wellies. Though they'll never sit on benches, jump into puddles, or play patty-cake or hopscotch.

Criers will only sit on garden chairs at Cozy Tea Park.

When upset, Criers will let out bloodcurdling screams directed towards the player in order to alert nearby Bobbies and Wellies. Unlike the other NPCs, Criers will not attack the player, nor can they defend themselves.

AchievementIcon66 Special Criers[]

During the Lightbearer DLC, the criers take the role of the maids, cleaning up whatever mess Nick Lightbearer or his fans had done.

Buff Conformist Trivia[]

  • The last two variants of the Criers were recoloured from pink and yellow, to green and pink.
  • In older versions of the game, the player could give bouquets to Criers to dissuade them. This is no longer possible.
  • In the launch trailer for the game, a crier attacks Arthur with a Rolling Pin, despite them never attacking the player in the actual game.
  • Criers have a unique animation for a takedown, where the player turns them around and puts their hand over the Crier’s mouth, causing them to pass out.
  • An early concept for the Crier was that they'd have a grocery cart that'd make noises when they got too close to the player, though it was scrapped due to complications.
  • In an earlier version of the game, a red variant of Madame Wanda could be found, as of the final release of the game she is no longer red. The red variant does not exist anymore either.

Buff EasilyForgotten Appearance[]

During the 11219 build of We Happy Few, criers could only spawn wearing a floral patterned yellow dress.

Buff TippyToes Behaviour[]

Criers would only spawn between 12am to 4pm within groups of other Wellies, in which they'd walk around within that random spot, and often bump into each other. If the player wasn't on Joy and stood around for over 5 or so seconds, Criers would start to get suspicious and scream they're a Downer so that other Wellies and Bobbies got alerted to their presence. They were completely helpless and could not fight the player themselves.

They'd also start screaming if they heard an alarm was activated, though they'd continue to scream even if the alarm was turned off.

Buff Conformist Trivia[]

  • From the 11219 to 14473 build, none of the AI had any names and would only be classified as "Corpse" upon death.
  • Criers used to actually scream that the player was a Downer. For some reason, the old audio files have been cut so that they now only scream.
